MSF: BC, Villanova or USC

@TNA or anybody else, please help!

I got accepted into Villanova and USC, and I am waiting for the answer from Boston College for my MSF. I am an international student and I want to work anywhere in the us, preferably in PE, but not necessarily. I am really in doubt on where to go...

I feel that BC and USC have the stronger name, with Nova slightly behind. My first option right now is BC because besides a good name it is located in a great place.

However, regarding placement for international students, I don’t know how to rank them, could you guys help?

Hi guys, first time poster, I'm going to try and keep this short, not make it my life story. In a nutshell, I am a non target graduate with limited options. Went to a partying state school (think top 10 as far as chics go) and did just that, partied for 3 and a half yrs. prior to that I attended a local uni for 2 yrs (screwed up there so I transferred). Graduated last December double majoring in finance and economics (3.2 at state school, 2.98 overall since I messed up badly at local uni). I learned about IB pretty late (last semester of senior yr) and since I graduated the job search has been brutal (have a few interviews coming up, none that look to pay more than 45k yearly) with only 1 f500 corp fin chance (screwed up the phone interview).

MSF, MMS/MiM or should I just go with an MFE if I want a job?

Hello. An International from Netherlands here. I am currently looking at various programs that will help me get a job in US after graduating(kinda like a gateway to a US industries). I have about 6 months of experience and no, I am not a native English speaker but I can do well and speak fluently(i still have my accent). There are several programs like MSF/MMS/MiM or the MFE. I probably won't get into MFE program because of little exp. But I can wait and work for 2 years more and also get CQF & FRM for MFE prep(which has rigorous curriculum including C++). MFE kinda guarantees a job as long as it's from a reputable school(I have 780 GMAT with 50q). I'm sure I will be able to get into MFE if I choose to.

MS Finance @ 31 yr old...need some advice !

Folks,
So I'm in a catch-22 situation.
I'm 31 yr old with 7+ yrs finance/consulting exp in middle office at a small finance firm...preferably I would had liked to do MBA from a top tier university but due to incompletion of an undergraduate degree (dropped out at begining of senior year) i'm unable to meet some entry requirements. I was an engineering student and have no desire to work in that field so completing that undergrad degree would be a long 1 yr effort rather professional fruitless.

For MBA I have offers from top 20-25+ universities like Warwick (UK), George Washington, George Town and a bunh more.

MSc Finance Current Students & Graduates – What would you do differently?

Hello fellow monkeys. As a prospective MSc Finance student, I would like to hear opinions of current MSc Finance students and graduates about what they would do differently if they had the chance to start their program again.

I am asking this question mainly because I have heard that, in many programs, it is quite difficult to balance academics with applications for internships/FT positions and interview preparation, since most MSc Finance programs are 1-year-long and are quite fast-paced (especially for someone without a background in business/finance).

Hello, I am a new poster. I recently came about this website while searching about the MSF program.

Background on me: I graduated from a pretty good LAC in the northeast. I have worked for a year and half after that and then my career wasn't really going anywhere so decided to apply for MSFs. I got interested in finance for about a year ago so please forgive if I don't know what's what.

The options available to me are as stated Ohio State, WashU- Singapore MSF program (I guess it is a new program).

I am Asian-American and always wanted to work in Asia for a while so when I got dinged at WUSTL MSF but accepted at WashU Singapore program I did not mind.

Most seem to require general AM experience. Do you think they care what type of firm it is, i.e. pension fund, MF, ect.

Also would it be better to get an MSF now or an MBA later? What caliber b-school would I need to go to? Is UW or Kelly good enough?

Personally, I have been admitted to one of the top MSc Finance programs in Europe (think LSE, Imperial, HEC, Bocconi etc). I have a STEM background and want to work in Investment Banking.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I tried to exhaust the search feature before posting this.

I'm currently thinking about applying for a MSF at a top university (think Princeton, MIT, LSE, etc.) and was curious to see if I currently have a reasonable chance at being accepted to these programs.

Stats:

740+ GMAT
3.9 Undergrad GPA at top state school (think Virginia, Texas, Michigan, UC Berkeley)
Finance undergrad, minor in Mathematics, and completed certificate program
Two tradinginternships
Full-time and internship at BBinvestment bank
Member/leadership roles of a few finance and volunteer organizations

Would MSF be my best bet?

Hey monkeys,

Long time lurker here, finally thought it was time I made a post to get some feedback from you guys.

I graduated a year ago from a non-target state school in CA with a degree in economics and finance. Even though it's not a target it is one of the most respected state schools in California, just not for finance. I took a job doing auditing because IB recruiting was non-existent, and frankly am not thrilled with the work I'm doing.

With no real world experience, would getting an MSF from a school like USC or USF help me rebrand myself, and put me in a better position to get a job in IBD? Does anyone know anything about OCR for these programs? Their websites were not very specific about placement.

CUNY Baruch MS Finance for quick rebrand

Hi all,

I need to rebrand, and going the MBA route doesn't seem logical for me.

My background is a business management degree from a non target with a sub 3 gpa. The cost of the program can be paid out of pocket and completed in about a year part time.

Considering this, is this program a worthwhile endeavor in your opinion? I think that it gives me a chance focus on finance and deflect some attention away from the undergrad gpa.

MSF or Big 4?

I need guidance from my fellow monkeys!

My objective is to work in the IBD (CF, valuation) of a Big 4 company or in a decent boutique bank (BB is clearly out of my league, pre-MBA at least). Unfortunately, my background was too weak to secure an internship at those companies, let alone a FT position. However, I have managed to secure an audit position at a Big 4 next fall, as well as a good MSF program (think top 15). I am now wondering which option is the best for me in order to reach my objectives. I know that transitioning from audit to TAS is difficult, but possible. I also know that the MSF is no guarantee and the risk and cost are substantial (and I have 0 work experience, which will hurt me when i'd graduate from the MSF).

Choosing MSF program: USC, BC, JHU

Hi, I am an undergrad from a decent business undergrad in CA.
I have been accepted to USC, BC, and Johns Hopkins for an MSF.
I am interested in hearing what advice everyone has about where to attend.

I know that Johns Hopkins is not the top school out of these, but I am leaning towards it. I would prefer to live in DC as it is closer to home and the area could have great internship/job opportunities.
I visited BC and while I know the program is good, I didn't feel like the school was the right fit. Does anyone have anything strong feelings?

Dual Degree with MSF/MFE?

I'm starting my MSF soon, but BC I will still have 4 yrs of fluff and one year of legit education, I'm pondering a dual degree. If I could, which is a better second masters to add: one in accounting, which could make me a "jack of all trades," or one in financial engineering (a master of one)? The math would be an uphill climb on the MFE, but the idea is that a CFA, an MSF/MFE would really show my dedication to the field, and quant chops.

USNWR Graduate Finance Rankings-their meaning, if any?

So I subscribed to USNWR's education compass, which is rather interesting. It has the rankings of business, med, law, education, engineering, and then ranks subspecialities within each of the schools. I looked at finance (naturally, this is WSO afterall), and here is what I saw:

1. University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
2. UChicago (Booth)
3. NYU (Stern)
4. Columbia
5. MIT (Sloan)
6. Stanford
7. Harvard
8. UC Berkeley (Haas)
9. Northwestern (Kellogg)
10. UCLA (Anderson)
11. UMichigan—Ann Arbor (Ross)
12. Carnegie Mellon (Tepper)
13. Duke (Fuqua)
14. University of Rochester (Simon)
15. Boston College (Carroll)
15. Loyola Maryland (Sellinger)
15. University of Texas Austin (McCombs)
18. St. Joseph's University (Haub)

Sport Management Undergrad Looking at MSF Programs Questions

$

I recently graduated with a Sport Management Degree from UMass Amherst and have been looking to apply to MSF programs fall 2015.

UMass has a top 40 undergrad business school and the Sport Management program is considered by many as a top 3 program in the world. The program is in the business school so I took your standard intro classes in finance, accounting, and management classes in addition to a sport finance class in which I excelled at. Graduated magna cum laude with a 3.8

My internships weren't in finance/accounting but were with large, prestigious, worldwide sports companies.

Upon graduation in December until a month ago I worked as a basic accountant/finance job with a travel company.

Vanderbilt MSF vs. UVA MS Commerce for FT IB

$

I have a liberal arts background from a non-target North East ugrad, 3.8+ GPA, good EC's, a summer in buyside ER, and a summer at a boutique IB.

From what I understand, both Vandy and UVA have great alumni networks but UVA has a stronger presence in NYC. This is hearsay and I don't have numbers to validate this. What do you guys think?

I know that there are few FT IB slots in BBs, but where would I have the best chances for NYC? How about independent firms like Evercore, Greenhill, Lazard, HL, etc.
