UT-Austin vs. Villanova MSF

Okay.. So I haven't officially gotten any word on whether I will be accepted to Nova yet... But I got my offer from Texas this morning. And because it is April I know I have to make a quick decision.

Which program should I choose? My goal is Growth Equity(not necessarily first job out of school.. Just opens the most doors towards that path).... Don't really care where.. The job is more important to me than the location. I know overall nationally the McCombs name probably does more, but I know in Philly/NYC that Nova places really well.

And as it will likely come up..

-Acct, Finance, and Management Major (2.64 GPA)
-Passed 2 parts of the CPA
-660 GMAT
-About 1.5 years of PubFin Experience.. LOTS of transaction Experience

Masters Econ to MBA

Hello WSO users. Will a masters in (financial) econ make it harder for me to get into a good MBA program? I've read on here that its usually harder for MSF students to get into MBA programs coz its 'repetitive'; true for masters in econ as well?

Graduating in the fall. Should I stay for another major (Accounting) or go for Ms Finance?

I am graduating in the fall with a BSc in Finance from a non-target, low GPA, 4.0 finance GPA, with school leadership roles, but no relevant IB internships. I have been applying, but it seems my chance of getting an IB analyst job after graduation is slim to none. I will be taking my CFA Level I this December. I am deciding to stay in school longer for
1. another major (Accounting), 2. Masters in Finance.

Can anyone in similar situation or if you're in charge of hiring analysts give your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

MS in Finance from super non-target?

Ok, so I am struggling with a decision here and wondering what WSO has to offer in terms of advice. I come from a top 50 undergrad with a BA in History and a Business minor(3.1) and had plans on going to law school. Scored rather well on the lsat and even interned at two law firms during college but have chosen not to pursue that career. Since graduation I have been working in the capacity of a real estate broker and have been doing quite well, however, this is also NOT what I want for my long term career. I'm naturally talented at sales and the job was suggested to me while applying to law schools so I decided to get licensed and start selling.

Opportunity Cost of MSF, and a specific MBA vs. MSF discussion

Opportunity-Cost.jpg

Hey everybody,

What do you think about, and how do you deal with, the loss of income when you go to grad school?

I've come to agree with WSO's advice of getting a job out of undergrad instead of trying to hit the MSF right away. It seems like the right choice (thanks all), but it's kicking a problem down the road - I come from a non-target and have bad grades.

At some point, I'll have to sacrifice a year's worth of income to do the MSF, unless my career shapes up so well that I can skip it and just go for a MBA later on.

MSF Guys

Question about SA internship before entering program. I am currently considering the MSF path to give myself an extra year to network, find an internship etc... Are you able to apply for SA IBDinternships the summer before starting the program even if they are designed for juniors? Also, if anybody has done this on here, did you first shoot for FT positions, then when denied, turn around, apply to MSF programs, and tell recruiters you wanted to pursue an internship position instead and that you would be enrolling at X University next year for a MSF? I am worried I won't be considered for an internship if I have already been denied full-time employment.

Thanks.

hello,
I have got admission from Johns Hopkins university and suny buffalo for msf program. I know that they are not in the same tier. However, I can not make my final decision. And I really need your help.

I am impressed by the 20k tuition and the content of courses offered by suny buffalo. The opportunity to study 1.5 years(1 year in JHU) appeals to me as well. But Buffalo is far away from NYC and the economy of it does not go well these years. Maybe it is not that suitable to study finance? btw, How would the program place me in the job market(or for internship)?

Should I get a masters in Finance

Hi Everyone,
So I just graduated with a degree in economics. I do have a job lined up at a boutique consulting firm (mainly working with tech companies doing project management). What I really want to be doing is working in asset management. I was thinking about applying to a MSF school for fall of 2014. Is this a bad idea?

Or should I do my CFA level 1 in December. I was hoping to work in finance after graduation but never got an offer.

I've heard a lot of the lower tier MSF schools are not worth it. I would love to work at a HF or become a portfolio manager one day but obviously i need to go to the right school.

Booyah!

Georgetown just announced that they are starting an online MSF. I would imagine this is the first step towards offering an on campus version. This is great news for anyone looking for a remote education and will compete nicely with the Indiana program.

Hello,

If any of you are current or previous MSF students at Bocconi, ESADE, IE, St. Gallen, or LSE, would you mind sending me a PM? Especially if you were an international/ non-EU student.

I have some specific questions about your experiences, and it would be a huge help to me to have these questions answered. Thanks!

I'm a recent Ivy grad majoring in history (3.9 gpa/750 SAT math) with no relevant experience and minimum quant classes, thinking about pursuing a MSFinance in LSE aspiring to break into banking.

Will I even be able to get a job after getting my degree? I don't see how I will be distinguished from my peers who have had ugrad business degrees and related internships.

Most seem to require general AM experience. Do you think they care what type of firm it is, i.e. pension fund, MF, ect.

Also would it be better to get an MSF now or an MBA later? What caliber b-school would I need to go to? Is UW or Kelly good enough?

Good US MsF Programs for Breaking In in Canada?

Graduating from a non-target in the US this summer or next fall, finance major, no relevant experience, got interested in the industry only recently and after asking some WSO users for advice thought I'd apply to MsF programs as a plan B if I don't land any internship this summer.

I'm not a US citizen and would want to work in Canada after graduation because I'm interested in the natural resources sector (interested in gas & oil market, family has ties to solar energy and mining) as well as the immigration process is much easier (family has business relations and friends in Canada too, none in the US).

Best path to PhD in Finance (MSF or MSEcon)

phd_in_horribleness_by_jrakob-d3rk1ot.jpg

I want to pursue a PhD in Finance, but I'm not sure which master to take first in order to increase my chance of acceptance. What do you guys think? MSF, MS Economics, or another?

I've heard that I should take the master at the university I wish to take my PhD, but let's assume this is false and have our focus on the degree itself.

Thanks,
The Viking
